Java 2 Overview

On December 8th, 1998, Java 2 was released. This was a major release. It incorporates new APIs, modifications to existing APIs, and some performance and stability enhancements. Many methods, classes and fields have been deprecated. There are a few potential incompatibilities with Java 1.1 code.

This module covers, at an overview level, the changes made in Java 2. There are no exercises in this module.

Pre-requisites

Material covered in this section requires attendees to know the following:

  • Basic Java knowledge including exception handling, threads, applets, full use of all the language constructs, and familiarity with the core Java 1.1 APIs.
