This is an advanced, five-day course for developers who already have a working knowledge of Java and its core 1.0 APIs and are looking to build open, distributed, client/server applications and applets.

During this course, attendees gain hands-on experience with advanced Java programming techniques necessary in a client/server environment. Topics covered include JavaBeans, Swing, JDBC, RMI, CORBA, Internationalization (I18N), JNI, Serialization, the Java 1.1 Event Delegation Model, inner classes, and more.

Why is this workshop important?

The World Wide Web is experiencing unprecedented growth. Java and Java-enabled Web pages/browsers are the keys to exploiting the power and interactive potential of the Web. Java is also a full-featured, secure, robust, object-oriented language that can be used to write industrial strength applications. In short, Java is the hottest new technology. Gaining an expert understanding of this de facto standard gives you a real competitive advantage.

What will I learn? At the end of this course, you will be able to:

Handle events using the Java 1.1 Event Delegation model. Use anonymous inner classes as your event listeners.

Turn an object into a stream of data -- and then back into an Object using the Serialization mechanism.

From a Java applet or application, invoke methods of remote Java objects using Remote Method Invocation (RMI).

From a Java Applet or application, invoke methods of remote objects (written in other languages) using CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture).

Build software components using JavaBeans.

Access databases via JDBC.

Call methods written in C/C++ from Java through the Java Native Interface (JNI).

Internationalize your application using Resource Bundles and formatting classes.
